John Marvel

John Marvel is an associate professor in the Schar School of Policy and Government, where he teaches courses on organization theory and public administration.

His research focuses on public management issues, including public sector employee turnover, public sector work motivation, and manager-employee relationships in public sector organizations. He also does work on public opinion, focusing on how citizens react to public and private sector performance failures and successes differently.

His work has been published or is forthcoming in the Journal of Public Administration Research and Theory, Public Administration Review, the International Public Management Journal, the American Review of Public Administration, and the International Journal of Public Administration.

He holds a BA in economics from Amherst College and a PhD in public administration from American University.
